East Africa market prices by month in local currency: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia, Burundi

A monthly price feed at market level for the wider East Africa region in local currencies: the second reading beside the official Kenyan table, and the one to use when a question crosses a border.

Catalogue entry: Real-time market prices. A faster-moving East African price feed at market granularity — a second reading alongside the official series.

Questions this data answers

  • What does maize cost this month in Kampala, Arusha or Bujumbura, in local currency, for cross-border trade decisions?
  • Is a Kenyan maize price rise visible in Uganda and Tanzania in the same month, or is it local?
  • Which Ethiopian markets report wheat, and how have their prices moved over the last year?
  • How does a Kenyan market the official table does not cover compare with its neighbours?

What the regional market prices holds

Monthly food prices at market level for the wider East Africa region: Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda, Ethiopia and Burundi, each in its own currency. Just 1 field, price, carries the number itself, tagged by country, first-level administrative unit, market, commodity and currency. Every stamp falls on the first of the month.

When to use it

The official Kenyan table is daily, deep and, by design, only Kenyan. This feed is the one to reach for the moment a question crosses a border, follows a commodity between countries, or lands on a Kenyan market the official table simply doesn’t report. Commodity slugs follow the same vocabulary as the Kenyan table wherever the same product exists, so maize here and dry maize there join cleanly on the month.

Reading it against the Kenyan table

Any comparison should aggregate the daily Kenyan rows to a monthly median first, exactly what the analyses do whenever a monthly view is requested. Differences for the same market are normal and expected here, since the official table is a daily observation while this feed is only ever a monthly one. The platform’s own analyses use the official table for Kenya and reach for this feed for everyone else.

A regional market prices sample

The rows below run July 2026: wheat in Bahir Dar in birr, bananas, cassava flour and maize in Bubanza in francs. Country codes throughout this layer run 3 letters, same as the rainfall and demand layers.

Through the MCP connector the same read is the platform_dataset tool with dataset=market.realtime_prices. Through a scheduled export it is one job with the same filters, delivered as a file. Every dataset takes the same arguments: start and end, every with agg, fields, limit up to 5,000, order, and the tags it declares.
